Detained national director of the Angolan Treasury on suspicion of misappropriation
Angolan national treasury director Edson Vaz was arrested by the Angolan Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in a police investigation into allegations of misappropriation of state funds through contracts entered into with fictitious companies.

According to news published today by the Angolan newspaper "O País", Edson Vaz was detained by members of the SIC on Friday afternoon in an investigation that implies "payments to companies that have not provided services to the State, especially in the field of Public Works ".

The agency Lusa tried to confirm the veracity of this detention with the SIC, but without success until the moment.

Angola's finance ministry also has not yet ruled on this case, the second of its kind within bodies overseeing minister Archer Mangueira in about a month.

On October 12, in another proceeding, the SIC detained at least five senior Officials of the General Tax Administration (AGT) on suspicion of misusing tax revenues to importing companies.

Following this case, the Ministry of Finance exonerated Nikolas Neto, indicted and one of the administrators of the AGT, announcing that he had initiated internal proceedings "to protect the rights of taxpayers, to prevent the dismissal of taxes due to the State and to moralize the institution."

On 26 September, the new Angolan President, João Lourenço, promised that the fight against economic crime and corruption will be an "important front for fighting" and "taking seriously" into the mandate of five years it now starts.

"Corruption and impunity have a direct negative impact on the ability of the state and its agents to carry out any program of governance. I urge all our people to work together to remove that evil that seriously threatens the foundations of our society," said João Lourenço.
