Romania. President reiterates support for anti-corruption magistrate
The Minister of Justice does not provide enough reason for the dismissal of the head of the anti-corruption agency in the country, said Wednesday Klaus Iohannis. He denounced an attempt to discredit the magistrate.

An impeachment of Laura Codruta Kovesi, magistrate responsible for the fight against corruption in Romania, "seems to move away more and more," said Wednesday the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

Justice Minister Tudorel Toader last week called for the dismissal of the head of the anti-corruption agency DNA, accusing him of "excess of authority".

President Iohannis, who has the last word on the dismissal of prosecutors, flew to Kovesi's aid on Friday and blamed Toader for not providing enough reasons for dismissal. "In these circumstances, it is obvious that we are far from an impeachment (of Kovesi). More and more far ... ", the head of state told reporters. "The numbers do not lie," he added, denouncing in the request of the Minister of Justice "an unacceptable attempt to discredit the DNA".

On Sunday, thousands of people demonstrated in several cities in Romania to support Kovesi and demand the departure of the Minister of Justice.
