The 10 countries and guests of South America, Japan and Qatar have learned of their fate at the Copa America this summer after Thursday's defeat in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil, Argentina Argentina and Uruguay were at the top of the four groups identified. The three pieces of the team were based on FIFA rankings worldwide, with one team from each team to three groups of four. The only warning was that Japan and Qatar could not be combined. The best two players in each group and the best two in third place will move to the quarterfinals, and will set one exit bracket from the winner.

Brazil has not won the Copa America since 2007, and pressure the host country to submit after failing in the last major competition hosted, the 2014 World Cup.

Chile won the Copa America last two decades (2015 Copa America, 2016 Copa America Centenario), while Uruguay got the most titles of all time with 15.

It remains to be seen whether Lionel Messi will return to the Argentine national team, which is seeking his first major trophy since the Copa America in 1993. Barcelona have not played for Argentina - the 14-time Copa America - since the last World Cup 2018 in 2018.
