For the first time in 15 years, there are five Australian players through to the third round of the Australian Open.
Wildcards Alexei Popyrin and Alex Bolt both stunned seeded opponents on Thursday evening, moving into the final 32 and joining Ash Barty, Alex de Minaur and Kimberly Birrell who advanced yesterday.

It means five Australians are through to the third round, the most since 2004.

Popyrin was already two sets up on world No.7 Dominic Thiem when the Austrian retired hurt at 7-5 6-4 2-0.

The big-serving teenager frustrated Thiem all match, causing him to break his racquet late in the first set. Thiem’s first round match was a five-setter and went extremely late on Tuesday.

Bolt had to do it the hard way, saving four match points in the fourth set against French 29th seed Gilles Simon before winning the decisive fifth to claim the match 2-6 6-4 4-6 7-6(8) 6-4.

It’s an incredible step forward for the 26-year-old who just a few years ago was in South Australia playing country footy.

Popyrin will face 28th seed Lucas Pouille in the third round while Bolt will face the winner between fourth seed Alexander Zverev and Jeremy Chardy.

Big-serving Canadian 16th seed Milos Raonic has beaten former champion Stan Wawrinka in a remarkable, gruelling four-set match on Rod Laver Arena.

An unusually star-studded matchup for this stage of the tournament, due to Wawrinka’s ranking dropping because of injury setbacks, most had predicted this would be a close one.

It certainly lived up to the hype in incredible style — the match ultimately determined by a handful of points with all four sets so far decided tiebreakers and Raonic winning 6-7 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (13-11) 7-6 (7-5).

The encounter had everybody on the edge of their seats, including Belgian model Camille Ringoir, who is reportedly Raonic’s girlfriend.
